How would I go about researching previous court cases?

I am looking to compare a current assault case with previous ones. Where are good places to look for finding results of such court cases (websites, books, etc). How would I go about researching previous court cases?
The two most widely used sites by attorneys are www.lexis.com and www.westlaw.com. Both are a pay service and fairly expensive. However, if you have a law library in your town, they may offer use of one or the other for free.

You can also try a variety of print sources at the law library: Am. Jur., CJS, etc. etc. etc. But your best resource will be the librarian herself. Be very polite and ask if she can help you find what you're looking for. At the very least she'll point you in the right direction.
