Knowbody knows. However, their are three possible alternatives when DCS takes someone's kids.

1. They get a relative to take care of the kids.

2. Foster homes are considered to usually be the best option if a relative is not available. Keep in mind that many foster parents are decent people who care about the kids they take care of. Typically, they used to be poor women who had stayed home and raised their own kids. Now they get a little money from the state for temporarilly taking care of kids. Most, but not all, foster parents care about the kids they take care of. But there are cases of abuse. Still, the group homes are by far the worst place for a child to end up. Unfortunately, the foster home system is falling apart becuase social policy dictates that women should work and that getting welfare from the state and staying home to raise kids is freeloading. The effect on children who become wards of the court is devestating becuase it increases the liklihood that the kids will go to group homes.

3. There are for profit ';group homes'; this is where the most abuse takes place. Sometimes it's the Adult Caretakers. Sometime's it's other kids who were/are abused themselves.

There really are no accurate statistics on abuse as only the worst cases come to the attention of DCS. Some of the DCS people are very dedicated but they have insane case loads and there's no way they can stay on top of things.

I used to work in the system. Abused children don't vote, they have no lobby, they have no options. Society treats them with about the same degree of concern that is afforded to used toilet paper.

The number of kids that become wards of the court is staggering. A lot of people have serious drug and alcohl problems and lose the ability to take care of their children and DCS steps in.

Thank you for asking.

There is a whole field of law called ';dependency law'; that deals kids that end up in the system. It is the lowest paying, least prestigious and one of the most important areas of the law. You will never see a dependency lawyer's picture on the cover of any of the countless Lawyer's Magazines who pay endless homage to those lawyers who make big money for corporations or plaintiffs.
