How are judges assigned to specific court cases in the US and Canada ?

Is it completely random (which seems to be the fairest way), based on availablity or based on expertise etc ?How are judges assigned to specific court cases in the US and Canada ?
They are usually assigned by a random draw. However, if a judge is particularly overloaded, or has a conflict, he or she can transfer the case out to another judge.

Some areas have judges who handle special things like divorces, foreclosures, criminal cases, etc. In those situations, they will be randomly assigned to the judges who handle those special things.
