Many, many survived the attacks. In fact, more died in the fire-bombings of Tokyo than in Hiroshima. There was more wide-spread damage, too. What set atomic weapons apart was that it was *one bomb* as opposed to several hundred bombers carrying full loads. That and the lasting effects of radiation, though this wasn't understood until later.
There is an excellent book called ';Hiroshima Diary'; by Michihiko Hachiya, an doctor injured in the attack. He survived and wrote his account of the bombing, its effects on people and trying to help others survive. You can find it at your local library or on Amazon. I'd highly recommend it.
';... survived ... survivors ...';?
First of all, no hydrogen bombs have ever been exploded near people, only tested on deserted islands and ships etc.
Secondly, read up about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I was in Hiroshima less than 10 years after the war and met several ';survivors'; who ';survived';. The fire bombings of Tokyo and other cities were worse... if you exclude the haunting effects of radiation exposure.
See, for example, http://www.hiroshima-remembered.com/
There were numerous survivors of the atom bomb blasts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Many of them were horribly burned and many suffered from radiation illnesses and diseases. Look up those two city's history in ww2 and you will see a lot of info on the aftermath.
